...The Tennessee Walking Horse was developed in the middle Tennessee basin in the last quarter of the 19th century. Horses were a necessity and a highly valuable asset to the southern planters and farmers. However, long hours in the saddle surveying their extensive acreage could be extremely uncomfortable. A small group of far sighted men began the development of a gaited horse with a smooth, gliding motion. Bred principally from the Standard bred, the Morgan, the Thoroughbred and the Saddle bred, a uniquely gaited horse emerged, the Tennessee Walking Horse.
